Hotelympia, the biennial UK exhibition for foodservice and hospitality, ended last week, with encouraging signs of growth in the natural refrigerant sector. Among those exhibiting at London's ExCeL were several companies offering hydrocarbon products, and Iglu Cold Systems Ltd, nominated for an Innovation Award in the Equipment category for the CO2 refrigeration system.

The halls at Hotelympia were a hive of activity with visitors eager to see what innovative products the industry had to offer. Over 65 companies exhibited refrigeration/ freezer solutions and among those companies exhibiting natural refrigerant products were Hoshizaki UK, Williams Refrigeration, Adande Refrigeration, Foster Refrigerator, Gram UK Ldt, and Iglu Cold Systems Ltd.
Hotelympia Innovation awards recognises CO2 refrigeration
The Hotelympia Innovation Award nominates 6 finalists in each award section: Equipment, Food and Drink, Interiors and Technology. In a new twist, this year’s contenders pitched their ideas to a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style industry panel, behind closed doors.
Among the finalists battling it out in this year’s Award were natural refrigerant specialists Adande Refrigeration and Iglu Cold Systems Ltd, both nominated in the Equipment category. The final list of nominees in the equipment category included:
  • Iglu Cold-Systems: Iglu CO2 Refrigeration;
  • Adande Refrigeration: Adande Compact system;
  • Hobart: AUP warewashing equipment;
  • Glen Dimplex Professional Appliances: Burco Synergy Grill;
  • Rational: Self-Cooking-Center whitefficiency unit;
  • Control Induction: Slider induction cooker.
This year Iglu’s CO2 refrigeration narrowly missed out to natural refrigerant rival Adande, who won for their Compact undercounter refrigeration unit, designed to also use hydrocarbon R600. Winners in other categories included a self-stabilising table, an edible ‘taste bomb’, an atomising grill and a portable draught beer dispenser.
Award nominated CO2 product used at Harrods
Along with CCS Refrigeration, Iglu Cold Systems Ltd is one of the first UK foodservice equipment manufacturers to use climate and ozone friendly CO2. The company’s range of CO2 products operate and function using a remote CO2 pack system developed in conjunction with a partner. At this year’s Hotelympia, Iglu Cold Systems Ltd displayed several of its modular CO2 compatible refrigerated counters and cabinets.
The award nominated Iglu refrigeration units have been independently tested and approved for installation in Harrod’s luxurious Food Hall, where the existing R22 and R404A refrigeration systems cooling the cold rooms and food cases were replaced with a purpose built CO2 plant room.
